Description and Climate
The rainforest biome is found near the equator. The water cycle is very rapid near the equator so the rainforest gets a lot of rain. It rains more than ninety days a year in the rainforest. The temperature of the rainforest is fairly constant all year at an average of 74 degrees Fahrenheit. The main plants in this biome are trees. Trees in this biome can reach a height of more than 164 feet. They form a canopy, the forest floor is called the understory. The canopy also keeps sunlight from reaching the plants in the understory. The organisms have to find ways to adapt to this, especially plants. They have to find ways to get sunlight and water.
In the average year in a tropical rain forest, the climate is hot and humid because of the approximate annual rainfall of 250 cm per year. The rain forest has a lot of rain because it is very hot and wet. Warm air can hold a lot of water vapor as it rises, but it can’t hold as much when it cools. As the warm air meets cold layers in the atmosphere, condensation takes place and the vapor forms droplets which forms clouds. The clouds then get too heavy and produce rain. There is a lot of direct sunlight in the rainforest making it humid. A lot of the rain that falls on the rain forest canopy washes the minerals and nutrients out of the soil, so the ground is not very fertile.
